Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
