Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
