This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
